Analysis of a film poster

What genre is the film? The film poster has many genre’s, romance, drama and fantasy. Because this film has more than one genre it is called a hybrid film.


Which genre conventions are referred to? The genre conventions to this film poster is the two main characters. The two main characters body language shows they hugging. It looks like he is holding her trying to not let her go. I know that its a film about love because shes wearing an engagement ring. This shows the audience that it is a romance film. In the background there is bokeh (glitter) in a bright orange colour behind the woman fading into a dark blue which is behind the man.


Which conventions of the form are used? The conventions of the film poster has the main title, credit block, image of the characters. There is also a date included to know when it will be released which is at the bottom of the page in a small but bold font. The name of the main actors are at the top of the page in a different colour to the rest of the writing. Other film posters have a tagline but this one does not have one.



Describe the mise-en-scene in detail including location, lighting, costume, make-up:
The Mise-en-scene of this film poster has two characters, the lighting is shining on the mans face. The woman is looking directly at the camera unlike the man who has his eyes closed facing away from the camera. The woman is wearing an engagement ring which suggests that the film is about love.



What are the main figures/objects/background of the poster? Are they represented photographically?
There are two people, male and female hugging eachother and are obviously in love. They have been represented photographically. You do not know where they are because the background of the film poster has bright bokeh (glitter). Behind the woman main character, there is orange bokeh that softly fades into a dark blue which is positioned behind the man. The main characters are not looking at each other which you might not usually find on a romance film poster. But instead they seem to be looking in different directions. Hes facing away from the camera but she is looking directly at it, which make it look like she is looking at you.



How does the layout of the poster affect its message?
The image of the main characters have been positioned onto one side of the page and the writing on the other, so the main title, credit block and the date are not on the image, so your focus is on the main characters. The main characters are in a strange position because they are lying down but the designer has put the image upwards, and onto one side of the poster.



Describe why the designer has used the particular typeface.
The designer has used a serif typeface which looks simple so it does not take the focus away from the picture.

What visual camera techniques have been used?
This is an unusual image. They have taken an image of the main characters lying down but rotated the image onto its side. they have made the woman look straight at the camera so it looks like she is looking at you which draws you in.


Are the messages in the poster primarily visual, verbal, or both?
The film poster is mostly visual, because you focus of the image of the characters but not the writing.



Who do you think is the intended audience for the poster? Why?
I think this film poster is intended for older teenagers and adults, because it appeals to myself and it looks interesting to adults.


Given that all movie posters have the same purpose - to get audiences to go see a movie - what persuasive techniques does the poster use? The imagery used on the poster is unusual. They have been photographed lying down but have rotated the image round, this makes the film poster interesting and different. If you like romance films you know that this film poster is about love and romance because she is wearing an engagement ring.



What USP is used?
The Time Travelers Wife was originally a book. On the film poster it says ‘From The Acclaimed
Best seller’ so you know that it was a well known book.

How is attention gained (humour, shock, surprise familiar face of a star)?
The two main characters are very well know and have both been in many films, which grabs the attention of the audience and think that it must be good because Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams.
